As the housing crisis deepens across Australia, YIFBY (Yes In Faith’s Back Yard) has emerged as a bold solution transforming underutilised faith-owned land into much needed affordable housing.
Many of these organisations own significant amounts of well-located land, often in established communities with existing infrastructure. Yet, much of this land remains underutilised. The YIFBY movement recognises this untapped potential, encouraging religious institutions to reimagine their land as a vehicle for social good by repurposing it for affordable housing developments.
Through dedicated advocacy by our YIFBY experts, Q Shelter, and the Archdiocese of Brisbane, a landmark reform was achieved in December 2024 when the Queensland Government amended the state’s planning framework to support the development of community housing on church and charity-owned land.
It is encouraging to be collaborating now with our fellow peak and industry bodies, as well as state and local government, to develop much needed infrastructure.
