Project Overview

Therefor Group partnered with Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) to develop and test a methodology for assessing bushfire risks in communities with limited evacuation access. The project ranked risk levels using spatial data and vegetation analysis and provided recommendations to enhance community safety.

With the increasing threat of out-of-control bushfires becoming a regular feature of our environment, Therefor Group was engaged to investigate and design a methodology that quantitatively assessed the level of risk posed by bushfire hazard to areas of the community that have limited vehicular access and egress.

Limited access represents a high threat to a community’s ability to evacuate during a bushfire event should the need arise. The method developed integrated numerous bushfire characteristics that may affect a community, and spatial analysis data sources were used to transparently rank various communities in response to the identified hazard rating and help determine appropriate treatments to remediate the threat.

Project Outcomes

The following outcomes were delivered as part of this project:

  • Bushfire Hazard Modelling
  • Spatial Analysis
  • Bushfire mitigation
  • Strategic development

Therefor Group’s integration of spatial analysis with ground-truthing of vegetation communities provided highly accurate hazard assessments. Collaboration with MBRC and using GIS to analyse and rank communities based on fire risk allowed for precise identification of high-risk areas. The ability to offer multiple mitigation strategies (e.g., tree removal and road widening) was a key value add, providing flexibility for Council decision-making.

Leading Change

The team’s approach to developing a scalable and transparent methodology demonstrated Therefor’s value mindset and commitment to leading change. By providing recommendations to improve the proposed methodologies, we ensured better assessments of the current bushfire risks.

Our collaboration with MBRC ensured the methodology was practical and aligned with local needs, demonstrating our citizenship and leadership in environmental consultancy. This project also reflects Therefor Group’s dedication to ethical decision-making, ensuring our solutions were practical and sensitive to environmental considerations.
