Set within one of the world’s most ecologically rich regions, Cairns is a city defined by contrast – where urban ambition meets the delicate balance of tropical ecosystems and cultural heritage. As one of the few first-world cities located in a wet tropics environment, its future growth demands a nuanced approach.

Engaged by Cairns Regional Council, Therefor Group – alongside our project partners – provided multidisciplinary support to shape a long-term strategic framework for the city’s evolution. Our services spanned urban planning, environmental analysis, bushfire risk assessment, and workshop facilitation, ensuring diverse perspectives were captured and integrated into the final vision.
The study’s findings highlight the critical role of blue-green infrastructure in guiding future decision-making. These natural systems are not only vital to ecological resilience but also central to cultural identity and economic opportunity. Through collaborative workshops, we helped surface community values and Traditional Owner perspectives – ensuring custodianship and Country were embedded in the planning process.
By combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of place, our team helped deliver a framework that is both visionary and grounded. It reflects the unique character of Cairns and sets a course for growth that future generations will value – where environmental integrity, cultural respect, and economic vitality coexist.
